Understanding How Your Emotions & Thoughts Are Connected-Part II

“The greatest need of our time is to clean out the enormous mass of mental and emotional rubbish that clutters our mind.” ~Thomas Merton

As stated before healing needs to occur in the physical form not only in the mind. And if you don’t feel safe to experience your emotions and sensations you likely don’t feel safe in the physical body. The mind is the gatekeeper but it doesn’t call the shots like you think it does. It's important to stop trying so hard to “think” your way out of a situation and instead focus on being with what is coming up. Mindset is helpful when it is used in conjunction with body-based (somatic) techniques. But on it's own it doesn't work.

In fact, did you know that the body informs the mind much more than the mind informs the body? This is why it is crucial to examine the body as a unit made up of systems who affect each other. These systems are not independent but collaborative for your health and survival. They also affect how the body responds to life experiences whether internal or external.

You see, the body is far smarter than its given credit for. It is always sending the brain signals about how life is affecting you mentally, physically, spiritually, electrically, emotionally and energetically. It does this when it provides signs in the form of sensations. When affected in any way it signals that stress, dis-ease or imbalance is occurring and needs to be addressed. It is up to you to use this knowledge to work with your body to restore health and well being. Or to choose to ignore it and face the eventual breakdown of all systems.

When you begin to understand that all aspects of the body play a role in pain, symptoms and disease formation the puzzle begins to come together no?

Energy Medicine (EM) interrupts these old patterns and shifts them back into alignment. It allows for you to feel more grounded, safer in your environment and less triggered by those around you. It takes time and patience but healing can occur if you allow the body to drive the bus. This means letting go of any expectations, judgements and agendas.

The good news is that EM uses somatic based techniques like breathwork which can bring you back into NOW. These modalities allow you to shift out of your head and into your body. They allow the body and the mind to work together in harmony. The focus is on the body more than the mind as these techniques recognize that the true transformation takes place in the body not in the mind.

Sometimes I do sound healing, other times what I need is breathwork or maybe tapping (EFT) or movement. All are techniques and tools of Energy Medicine. The goal is to decipher what the body needs by becoming quiet and listening. Then leaning in to that little voice that only wants what's best for you. Each day can look different and there is less rigidity. Intention and mindfulness are more important than doing it right. Isn't that cool?

When you learn how to nourish yourself, not only with real food but with time, compassion, grace and forgiveness. These alterations to your perception and lifestyle allow you to feel more connected to your whole self. Self-care isn't selfish and it isn't another item to check off on your never-ending TO-DO list either.

Brene Brown says that worthiness isn't earned it is a give in. You deserve to be loved, cared for, forgiven, and shown compassion to yourself. You hold the power to make the changes in how your life unfolds and there will never be a perfect time to do anything...the time is NOW to show up for yourself because you deserve it!
